Central Maine faces a critical economic challenge: revitalizing its post-industrial economy by creating high-wage, high-demand jobs suited for the digital age. To address this, we have pioneered Maine’s newest regional entrepreneurial ecosystem, strategically aligning education, industry, and rural communities for the modern economy.
This initiative is transforming central Maine’s economy by establishing a rural hub for high-growth, knowledge-based jobs, particularly in sectors like tech, bioeconomy, and advanced manufacturing. The core of this effort is a data-driven hub-and-spoke model, led by the Central Maine Growth Council (CMGC) and its Dirigo Labs startup accelerator. This model integrates industry-aligned training, robust employer connections, and business incubation, supported by a powerful mentor network and access to capital that empowers entrepreneurs at every stage.
With satellite “spoke” locations like the Skowhegan Center for Entrepreneurship, we ensure widespread accessibility across the region. Our growing network of regional partners—including Main Street Skowhegan, Thomas College, Colby College, Kennebec Valley Community College, and the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce—helps drive innovation, workforce development, and capital growth, positioning central Maine to compete in today’s global and innovation-driven economy.
